Ginecomasty means: breasts growth but in case of men, the translation from Greek means” women's breasts”. Ginecomasty may affect one or both breasts.
The breast development in case of men may have various degrees: from discreet, to obvious. Most frequently ginecomasty is installed in puberty, but at adult age is present at about 25-30 % of the masculine population. The most frequent cause of ginecomasty is an increase of estrogen hormones level and the decrease of the level of androgen hormones. It has also been observed a connection between ginecomasty and the administration of certain medicines, the alcohol consumption, drugs, and obesity.
WHICH OF PATIENTS MAY BENEFIT BY THE REDUCTION MAMOPLASTY?
It can be operated at any age but only after an endocrinological consultation. In case of fat men operation is not recommended unless they loose weight through a diet.
Do not eat or drink after midnight, in the night preceding the operation.
It is forbidden to take aspirin and any other medicines which contain aspirin for 2 weeks preceding the operation
You must inform the doctor and the anesthetist , if you have any medical problems (high blood pressure, vascular problems, lung problems, infarct, diabetes, epilepsy, bleeding problems, neurological problems and allergies to different medicines)
If you smoke, it is recommended to give up smoking with at least 1-2 weeks before the operation.
THE SURGICAL INTERVENTION
It is made under general anesthesia or intravenous anesthesia that is completed with local anesthesia. If the excessive glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast growth it is made an incision on the inferior margin of areola, after that it is taken out the excessive glandular tissue, and this tissue is sent for a hystopathologycal examination. It is inserted a drainage tube in order to prevent the hematomas and seroms.
If the principaL cause of ginecomasty is the excessive fat than the ginecomasty is corrected by lipoaspiration.
The post-operator hospitalization lasts 1- 2 days, during which are administrated antibiotics.
The threads are taken out 7 days after operation. For 2-3 weeks the patient must wear a corset. The scars are reddish and swollen for about 6 months and only after a period of 9 months - one year, they scars become neat and fade. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure for one year after the surgery, because the scars may become pigmented.
